Saturday is the second leg of the Triple Crown, the 139th Preakness Stakes. So, we’re counting down the ALL-TIME BEST 10 PREAKNESS PERFORMANCES!
10. 1977-Seattle Slew
Slew was the second most recent Triple Crown winner. Incredibly, the racehorse is still the only of its kind with an undefeated record to win the three major races.
9. 2004-Smarty Jones
Ole’ Smarty won the 2004 Preakness by a ridiculous (and record) 11 1/2 lengths. The horse also won the Kentucky Derby, but came up just short (finished second) in its bid for the Triple Crown.
8. 1989-Sunday Silence
An epic showdown between the horse and Easy Goer made for an extremely entertaining race.
Shackleford narrowly takes down Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness favorite, Animal Kingdom. Another bid for the Triple Crown is nipped in the bud.
The last Triple Crown winner nearly lost the second leg to Alydar, but out dueled his rival at the end.
5. 2009-Rachel Alexandra
Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird could not match the favorite and the first filly to win the race since 1924.
4. 2005-Afleet Alex
Overcoming a near-catastrophic stumble, Afleet Alex was sill remarkably able to win by over 4 lengths!
3. 1962-Greek Money
Nothing, including jockey interference, could keep Greek out of the winner’s circle.
2. 1997-Silver Charm
Charm took home one of the most memorable horseraces of all-time, as it out-dueled not one…but two horses to snag the Preakness
What else did you expect? When not dancing with Craig Ferguson, Secretariat was kind of the best race horse of all-time. The fastest time ever in the Preakness only furthered its legend.
Enjoy the Preakness this Saturday! Movie Monday is a biggie:
