This one’s pretty obvious. The Hoff is huge in Germany and much of Europe for that matter. Why? I have no idea, as his music is extremely corny and overproduced. I guess they never saw “Baywatch”…
Cheap Trick is a solid act in the US, but in Japan they are one of the most popular bands of all-time. So much so, that they still sell out huge arenas and move albums/merch at a staggering rate. They’re even known as “The American Beatles.”
Richie is very popular in America, especially during the late-1970’s and 1980’s. Overseas though, he’s a phenomenon, whose popularity in unmatched. He’s such a big deal, that they even forget about his daughter’s bratty days.
Who, you might ask. Well, Manowar is like the real life Spinal Tap. They have virtually no following in the States, but are ridiculously popular in Eastern Europe. They’re also known to be one of the loudest rock bands ever to play.
Another musician who could walk down any American street and not be recognized once. That would not be the case in Cape Town though, where Rodriguez is legitimately the most popular musician ever.
Despite an occasional hit and twerk or two, Miley Cyrus isn’t a massive musical success in the US post-Hanna Montana. That’s not the case in Australia, where she has exponentially more success and popularity, selling-out the country’s biggest concert venues.
30 Seconds To Mars
Jared Leto & company have a nice Indie following in the USA, but are massively successful overseas. Nonetheless, their appeal in their home country may be growing, especially given Leto’s Oscar win in 2014.
Destiny’s Child was hugely popular and launched the career of Beyonce. A duet with Nelly had a fellow member, Kelly Rowland, basking in the light of overnight success. She had a brief stint of popularity, but then faded. Overseas though, she has had much more success, even outselling Beyonce in some places.
Mr. Big was a one hit wonder in the States, but have parlayed minor success into an incredible career in Japan. The band is held in uber-high regard and continues to have success to this day. Who knew?
The Killers are an outstanding band and had major success with “Hot Fuss.” Recently though, the band has fallen off the map. This is not the case in the UK, where The Killers are one of the most popular groups.
