In honor of Neighbors, which opens Friday nationwide, All-Time Best 10 looks at the Best 10 college movies ever!
Our job was not easy…but we whittled our list down to 10 films that best represent college life…for better or worse!
10. Old School (2003)
The “Frat Pack” in all their glory. This hit comedy combines all the trappings of previous standouts in the genre. Will Ferrell was unforgettable as Frank the Tank. Jeremy Piven was his perfect douchey self. Most notably though, this author still cringes at the site of a cinder block during trips to Home Depot (There’s no emoticon for horrifying genital pain!)
9. The Paper Chase (1973)
A film that accurately captures the rigors of collegiate academics, as well as the frustration of university bureaucracy. The flick fades and loses momentum during the second half. Nonetheless, John Houseman is absolute perfection.
8. The Nutty Professor (1996)
Quite possibly Eddie Murphy’s most famous role…behind Pluto Nash and Norbit of course. As funny as this one was (especially the Buddy Love/Dave Chappelle encounter), one cannot help but wonder if this was the moment Murphy’s career jumped the shark. His later work seems more akin to a schizophrenic cartoon character rather than a once great comic actor. Enjoy this tour de force though!
7. Revenge of the Nerds (1984)
I think a lot of the current generation sees this one on basic cable and wonders what the fuss was about. All I can say is check out the DVD, and enjoy the Tri-Lams’ raunchy romp through their freshman year. Also, check out a pre-Goose and ER Anthony Edwards, who probably still has flashbacks when someone calls him Gilbert in public.
6. The Social Network (2010)
This is where things get a little tricky. As purely a motion picture, this one is ranked way too low. The problem with putting it near the top is that little is devoted to looking at college life. For somebody starting school in 2004 though, when Facebook was on par with keggers as a college pastime, this modern classic at least needs a mention.
5. Back To School (1986)
A lost comedic classic that gets…well…not enough respect (sorry folks, had to do it!) Rodney is priceless as always. Burt Young shows his range playing a character…um…no he doesn’t, it’s the same role as Paulie from the Rocky films. Be on the look out for a young Robert Downey Jr. and the brilliant Paxton Whitehead as Rodney’s nemesis. Really though, at the end of the day, this one’s about one thing: TRIPLE LINDY!!!!!
4. Wonder Boys (2000)
I see your Robert Downey Jr. and raise you…Robert Downey Jr. In all seriousness though, this is an outstanding all-around film with an all-star cast and numerous unforgettable moments. While the film centers around meaning and acceptance, it has a ton of hilarity as well.
3. Rudy (1993)
As a kid growing up in the Midwest, the plot was one many of us could relate. While at times naive and schmaltzy, there’s no denying the power of this inspirational and moving flick. Even though you may not weep uncontrollably, if you make it through this one without at least a tear in your eye, than you have no soul. That’s right folks…no soul!
2. National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978)
Classic. Absolute classic. Enough said, right? If you haven’t heard or seen this one…buy it immediately!
1. Good Will Hunting (1997)
You want controversy? You got it. While Good Will Hunting doesn’t focus as much on college life as some of the previous entries, it undoubtedly encompasses the existential struggle all college students face at one point or another. Not to mention, this is absolutely one of the best screenplays ever written. To top it all off, Robin Williams shows elite acting chops as a troubled professor and mental health professional. One of the truly timeless movies of the last 20 years.
Well, that’s it folks! Our first 10 is in the bag! Like our 10? Cool. Hate it, cool. Tell us where we went wrong. The whole point of this site is discuss everybody’s favorite pastime, All-Time Best 10’s lists.
